RESUMEN

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials are a pathway to spintronic memory and computing devices with unprecedented speed, energy efficiency, and bit density. Realizing this potential requires AFM devices with simultaneous electrical writing and reading of information, which are also compatible with established silicon-based manufacturing. Recent experiments have shown tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) readout in epitaxial AFM tunnel junctions. However, these TMR structures are not grown using a silicon-compatible deposition process, and controlling their AFM order required external magnetic fields. Here it is shown three-terminal AFM tunnel junctions based on the noncollinear antiferromagnet PtMn3 , sputter-deposited on silicon. The devices simultaneously exhibit electrical switching using electric currents, and electrical readout by a large room-temperature TMR effect. First-principles calculations explain the TMR in terms of the momentum-resolved spin-dependent tunneling conduction in tunnel junctions with noncollinear AFM electrodes.

Electric currents have the intriguing ability to induce magnetization in nonmagnetic crystals with sufficiently low crystallographic symmetry. Some associated phenomena include the non-linear anomalous Hall effect in polar crystals and the nonreciprocal directional dichroism in chiral crystals when magnetic fields are applied. In this work, we demonstrate that the same underlying physics is also manifested in the electronic tunneling process between the surface of a nonmagnetic chiral material and a magnetized scanning probe. In the paramagnetic but chiral metallic compound Co1/3NbS2, the magnetization induced by the tunneling current is shown to become detectable by its coupling to the magnetization of the tip itself. This results in a contrast across different chiral domains, achieving atomic-scale spatial resolution of structural chirality. To support the proposed mechanism, we used first-principles theory to compute the chirality-dependent current-induced magnetization and Berry curvature in the bulk of the material. Our demonstration of this magnetochiral tunneling effect opens up an avenue for investigating atomic-scale variations in the local crystallographic symmetry and electronic structure across the structural domain boundaries of low-symmetry nonmagnetic crystals.

Despite innumerable efforts to develop effective therapeutics, it is difficult to achieve breakthrough treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the main reason is probably the absence of a clear target. Here, we reveal c-Jun N-terminal kinase 3 (JNK3), a protein kinase explicitly expressed in the brain and involved in neuronal apoptosis, with a view toward providing effective treatment for AD. For many years, we have worked on JNK3 inhibitors and have discovered 2-aryl-1-pyrimidinyl-1H-imidazole-5-yl acetonitrile-based JNK3 inhibitors with superb potency (IC50 < 1.0 nM) and excellent selectivity over other protein kinases including isoforms JNK1 (>300 fold) and JNK2 (∼10 fold). Based on in vitro biological activity and DMPK properties, the lead compounds were selected for further in vivo studies. We confirmed that repeat administration of JNK3 inhibitors improved cognitive memory in APP/PS1 and the 3xTg mouse model. Overall, our results show that JNK3 could be a potential target protein for AD.

We report direct visualization of spin-flip transition of the surface layer in antiferromagnet MnBi_{4}Te_{7}, a natural superlattice of alternating MnBi_{2}Te_{4} and Bi_{2}Te_{3} layers, using cryogenic magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The observation of magnetic contrast across domain walls and step edges confirms that the antiferromagnetic order persists to the surface layers. The magnetic field dependence of the MFM images reveals that the surface magnetic layer undergoes a first-order spin-flip transition at a magnetic field that is lower than the bulk transition, in excellent agreement with a revised Mills model. Our analysis suggests no reduction of the order parameter in the surface magnetic layer, implying robust ferromagnetism in the single-layer limit. The direct visualization of surface spin-flip transition not only opens up exploration of surface metamagnetic transitions in layered antiferromagnets, but also provides experimental support for realizing quantized transport in ultrathin films of MnBi_{4}Te_{7} and other natural superlattice topological magnets.

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is a promising strategy to control the structure of the supported metal catalyst. Especially, encapsulating metal nanoparticles through SMSI can enhance resistance against sintering but typically blocks the access of reactants onto the metal surface. Here, we report gas-permeable shells formed on Rh nanoparticles with enhanced activity and durability for the surface reaction. First, Fe species were doped into ceria, enhancing the transfer of surface oxygen species. When Rh was deposited onto the Fe-doped ceria (FC) and reduced, a shell was formed on Rh nanoparticles. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results show that the shell is formed upon reduction and removed upon oxidation reversibly. CO adsorption on the Rh surface through the shell was confirmed by cryo-DRIFTS. The reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction (CO2 + H2 → CO + H2O) occurred on the encapsulated Rh nanoparticles effectively with selective CO formation, whereas bare Rh nanoparticles deposited on ceria produced methane as well. The CO adsorption became much weaker on the encapsulated Rh nanoparticles, and H2-spillover occurred more on the FC, resulting in high activity for RWGS. The exposed Rh nanoparticles deposited on ceria presented degradation at 400 °C after 150 h of RWGS, whereas the encapsulated Rh nanoparticles showed no degradation with superior durability. Enhancing surface oxygen transfer can be an efficient way to form gas-permeable overlayers on metal nanoparticles with high activity and durability.

Three acylated saponins and three flavonoid glycosides, along with nine known flavonoids, were isolated from the fruits of Stewartia koreana Nakai ex Rehder (Theaceae) using relative mass defect filtering analysis. The structures of these compounds were determined by performing spectroscopic analyses and using chemical methods. Furthermore, all the isolates were evaluated for their effects on the mRNA expression of the genes for proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) as well as their inhibitory activities on PCSK9 and LDLR binding. None of the isolates was deemed to be active in PCSK9-LDLR binding inhibition. However, (+)-catechin was found to inhibit PCSK9 expression and increase LDLR expression, suggesting the potential of (+)-catechin to lower cholesterol level via the downregulation of PCSK9 expression.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to test the anti-rheumatic effects of A. jaluense tubers in acute and chronic arthritis rats, and to assign its ingredients through UHPLC-TOF/MS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subcutaneous injection of carrageenan for acute arthritis and complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) for chronic arthritis was carried out in the hind paw of SD rats. The paw volume was measured by a plethysmometer thermal hyperalgesia was tested using a thermal plantar tester, and mechanical hyperalgesia was evaluated by ankle flexion evoked vocalizations. The expression of c-Fos in the brain hippocampus was measured with the avidin-biotin-peroxidase technique. The ingredients were assigned by UHPLC-TOF/MS, chromatography was performed by UHPLC system with DAD detector and BEH C18 column, and spectroscopy was conducted by ESI-MS system. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The 80% ethanoic extract of A. jaluense tubers showed an acute anti-inflammatory effect by suppressing the edema volume in the hind paw of carrageenan-stimulated rats. In addition, A. jaluense tubers exerted an anti-rheumatic activity by reducing the secondary swelling volume from an immunological reaction in the left hind paw of CFA-induced chronic arthritis rats. Additionally, oral treatment with the 80% ethanoic extract -showed potent analgesic effects in the arthritis rats by recovering the paw withdrawal latency stimulated by the thermal hyperalgesia and by reducing the vocalization scores evoked by ankle flexion on both hind paws. Moreover, its treatment also indicated an anti-psychiatric effect by controlling the c-Fos protein expression of the brain hippocampus in CFA-stimulated arthritis rats. These results suggested that these therapeutic effects were exhibited by less toxic mono-esterified diterpenoid alkaloids (MDAs), and nontoxic non-esterified diterpenoid alkaloids (NDAs). CONCLUSION: A. jaluense tubers may act as viable therapeutic or preventive candidates for acute and chronic arthritis, particularly, for immune-inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis to suppress the pain and psychiatric condition.

Radiation-induced injury is damage to normal tissues caused by unintentional exposure to ionizing radiation. Image-based evaluation of tissue damage by irradiation has an advantage for the early assessment of therapeutic effects by providing sensitive information on minute tissue responses in situ. Recent magnetic resonance (MR)-based electrical conductivity imaging has shown potential as an effective early imaging biomarker for treatment response and radiation-induced injury. However, to be a tool for evaluating therapeutic effects, validation of its reliability and sensitivity according to various irradiation conditions is required. We performed MR-based electrical conductivity imaging on designed phantoms to confirm the effect of ionizing radiation at different doses and on in vivo mouse brains to distinguish tissue response depending on different doses and the elapsed time after irradiation. To quantify the irradiation effects, we measured the absolute conductivity of brain tissues and calculated relative conductivity changes based on the value of pre-irradiation. The conductivity of the phantoms with the distilled water and saline solution increased linearly with the irradiation doses. The conductivity of in vivo mouse brains showed different time-course variations and residual contrast depending on the irradiation doses. Future studies will focus on validation at long-term time points, including early and late delayed response and evaluation of irradiation effects in various tissue types.

Holographic projection displays provide high diffraction efficiency. However, they have a limited projection angle. This work proposes a holographic projection display with a wide angle, which gives an image of size 306mm×161mm at 700 mm and reduced speckle noise. The solution uses single Fourier lens imaging with a frequency filter and hologram generation utilizing complex coding and nonparaxial diffraction. The experiment was performed with a 4K phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) to prove the high efficiency of the developed numerical tools. Optical reconstruction shows high resolution and high image quality achieved from a single frame. Hence, displaying video at a full frame rate of the SLM is possible.

Phytochemical investigation on the n-BuOH-soluble fraction of the aerial parts of Epimedium koreanum using the PCSK9 mRNA monitoring assay led to the identification of four previously undescribed acylated flavonoid glycosides and 18 known compounds. The structures of new compounds were elucidated by NMR, MS, and other chemical methods. All isolated compounds were tested for their inhibitory activity against PCSK9 mRNA expression in HepG2 cells. Of the isolates, compounds 6, 7, 10, 15, and 17-22 were found to significantly inhibit PCSK9 mRNA expression. In particular, compound 7 was shown to increase LDLR mRNA expression. Thus, compound 7 may potentially increase LDL uptake and lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Penthorum chinense has been used in East Asia for the treatment of cholecystitis, infectious hepatitis, jaundice and to treat liver problems. Recent evidences provided the potential for the clinical use of P. chinense in the treatment of metabolic disease. AIM OF THE STUDY: Based on the traditional use and recent evidences, we investigated the effects of constituents from P. chinense with modulation on proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) expression, and the effect of the most active substance on cholesterol uptake, and genes relevant to lipid metabolism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The isolation of compounds from the BuOH-soluble extract of 80% methanol extract of P. chinense was conducted using chromatographic methods and the structures were established by interpreting spectroscopic data. Quantitative real time-PCR, and Western blot analysis were performed to monitor the regulatory activity on PCSK9 and LDLR expression. PCSK9-LDLR binding interaction was also tested. The cholesterol uptake in hepatocyte was measured using 1,1-dioctadecyl-3,3,3,3-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI)-labeled LDL cholesterol. Additionally, gene network analysis of LDLR and responses of its target proteins were carried out to discover genes germane to the effect of active compound on HepG2 cells. Moreover, we performed protein-protein interaction analysis via String and constructed the compound target network using Cytoscape. RESULTS: Two new neolignans and 37 known compounds were characterized from P. chinense. Of the isolated compounds, (7'E,8S)-2',4,8-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-2,4'-epoxy-8,5'-neolign-7'-en-7-one (3), penthorin A (4) and methyl gallate (25) were found to suppress PCSK9 mRNA expression with IC50 values of 5.13, 15.56 and 11.66 µM, respectively. However, all the isolated compounds were found to be inactive in PCSK9-LDLR interaction assay. Additionally, a dibenzoxepine-type lignan analog, (7'E,8S)-2',4,8-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-2,4'-epoxy-8,5'-neolign-7'-en-7-one (3) demonstrated to upregulate LDLR mRNA and protein expression via transcriptional factor sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP2). Furthermore, (7'E,8S)-2',4,8-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-2,4'-epoxy-8,5'-neolign-7'-en-7-one (3) increase the LDL-cholesterol uptake in DiI-LDL assay. CONCLUSION: (7'E,8S)-2',4,8-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-2,4'-epoxy-8,5'-neolign-7'-en-7-one (3) seemed to increase potentially cholesterol uptake via the downregulation of PCSK9 and the activation of LDLR in hepatocytes. Moreover, SREBP2 was found to play an important role in regulation of PCSK9 and LDLR by (7'E,8S)-2',4,8-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-2,4'-epoxy-8,5'-neolign-7'-en-7-one.

Natural products have been fundamental materials in drug discovery. Traditional strategies for observing natural products with novel structure and/or biological activity are challenging due to large cost and time consumption. Implementation of the MS/MS-based molecular networking strategy with the in silico annotation tool is expected to expedite the dereplication of secondary metabolites. In this study, using this tool, two new dilignans with a 2-phenyl-3-chromanol motif, obovatolins A (1) and B (2), were discovered from the stem barks of Magnolia obovata Thunb. along with six known compounds (3-8), expanding chemical diversity of lignan skeletons in this natural source. Their structures and configurations were elucidated using spectroscopic data. All isolates were evaluated for their PCSK9 mRNA expression inhibitory activity. Obovatolins A (1) and B (2), and magnolol (3) showed potent lipid controlling activities. To identify transcriptionally controlled genes by 1 along with downregulation of PCSK9, using small set of genes (42 genes) related to lipid metabolism selected from the database, focused bioinformatic analysis was carried out. As a result, it showed the correlations between gene expression under presence of 1, which led to detailed insight of the lipid metabolism caused by 1.

RESUMEN

Two new dimeric selaginellins, diselaginellins C and D (1 and 2), a new unusual derivative, selapiginellin A (4), a new selaginpulvilin U (5), and a known derivative, diselaginellin A (3), were isolated from Selaginella tamariscina (P. Beauv.) Spring. Among these compounds, selapiginellin A (4) is the first naturally occurring compound comprising an ether-linked dimer of a selaginellin and a selaginpulvilin. The absolute configurations of 1, 2, and 4 were elucidated by spectroscopic data analyses. Compound 5 was found to regulate mRNA expression of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene and LDLR-related genes.

RGB-D cameras have been commercialized, and many applications using them have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a robust registration method of multiple RGB-D cameras. We use a human body tracking system provided by Azure Kinect SDK to estimate a coarse global registration between cameras. As this coarse global registration has some error, we refine it using feature matching. However, the matched feature pairs include mismatches, hindering good performance. Therefore, we propose a registration refinement procedure that removes these mismatches and uses the global registration. In an experiment, the ratio of inliers among the matched features is greater than 95% for all tested feature matchers. Thus, we experimentally confirm that mismatches can be eliminated via the proposed method even in difficult situations and that a more precise global registration of RGB-D cameras can be obtained.

In this paper, we propose a new method for coding a full complex hologram with random phase. Since holograms with random phase have very unique spatial and frequency characteristics, a new compression method suitable for such holograms is required. We analyze the frequency characteristics of holograms with random phases and propose a new adaptive discrete wavelet transform (aDWT). Next, we propose a new modified zerotree alogrithm (mZTA) suitable for the subband configuration generated by the modified wavelet transform method. The results of the compression using the proposed method showed higher efficiency than the previous method, and the reconstructed images showed visually superior results.

Using molecular networking-guided isolation, three new galloyl ester triterpenoids (1-3), two new hexahydroxydiphenic acid-conjugated triterpenoids (6 and 7), and four known compounds (4, 5, 8, and 9) were isolated from the fruits and leaves of Castanopsis sieboldii. The chemical structures of 1-3, 6, and 7 were elucidated on the basis of interpreting their NMR, HRESIMS, and ECD spectra. All compounds (1-9) were evaluated for their glucose uptake-stimulating activities in differentiated adipocytes using 2-deoxy-2-[(7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl)amino]-d-glucose as a fluorescent-tagged glucose probe. Compounds 2 and 9 resulted in a 1.5-fold increase in glucose uptake. Among them, compound 2 from the fruits showed an upregulation of p-AMPK/AMPK ratio in differentiated C2C12 myoblasts to support the mechanism proposed of glucose uptake stimulation.

MoTe_{2} has recently attracted much attention due to the observation of pressure-induced superconductivity, exotic topological phase transitions, and nonlinear quantum effects. However, there has been debate on the intriguing structural phase transitions among various observed phases of MoTe_{2} and their connection to the underlying topological electronic properties. In this work, by means of density-functional theory calculations, we investigate the structural phase transition between the polar T_{d} and nonpolar 1T^{'} phases of MoTe_{2} in reference to a hypothetical high-symmetry T_{0} phase that exhibits higher-order topological features. In the T_{d} phase we obtain a total of 12 Weyl points, which can be created/annihilated, dynamically manipulated, and switched by tuning a polar phonon mode. We also report the existence of a tunable nonlinear Hall effect in T_{d}-MoTe_{2} and propose the use of this effect as a probe for the detection of polarity orientation in polar (semi)metals. By studying the role of dimensionality, we identify a configuration in which a nonlinear surface response current emerges. RESUMEN

Here, we present microscopic evidence of the persistence of uniaxial A-type antiferromagnetic order to the surface layers of MnBi_{2}Te_{4} single crystals using magnetic force microscopy. Our results reveal termination-dependent magnetic contrast across both surface step edges and domain walls, which can be screened by thin layers of soft magnetism. The robust surface A-type order is further corroborated by the observation of termination-dependent surface spin-flop transitions, which have been theoretically proposed decades ago. Our results not only provide key ingredients for understanding the electronic properties of the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi_{2}Te_{4}, but also open a new paradigm for exploring intrinsic surface metamagnetic transitions in natural antiferromagnets.

The use of human gesturing to interact with devices such as computers or smartphones has presented several problems. This form of interaction relies on gesture interaction technology such as Leap Motion from Leap Motion, Inc, which enables humans to use hand gestures to interact with a computer. The technology has excellent hand detection performance, and even allows simple games to be played using gestures. Another example is the contactless use of a smartphone to take a photograph by simply folding and opening the palm. Research on interaction with other devices via hand gestures is in progress. Similarly, studies on the creation of a hologram display from objects that actually exist are also underway. We propose a hand gesture recognition system that can control the Tabletop holographic display based on an actual object. The depth image obtained using the latest Time-of-Flight based depth camera Azure Kinect is used to obtain information about the hand and hand joints by using the deep-learning model CrossInfoNet. Using this information, we developed a real time system that defines and recognizes gestures indicating left, right, up, and down basic rotation, and zoom in, zoom out, and continuous rotation to the left and right.

In this study, the chemical diversity of polyphenols in Iris lactea var. chinensis seeds was identified by combined MS/MS-NMR analysis. Based on the annotated chemical profile, the isolation of stilbene oligomers was conducted, and consequently, stilbene oligomers (1-10) were characterized. Of these, compounds 1 and 2 are previously undescribed stilbene dimer glycoside (1) and tetramer glycoside (2), respectively. Besides, to evaluate this plant seed as a rich source of stilbene oligomers, we quantified three stilbene oligomers of I. lactea var. chinensis seeds. The contents of three major stilbene oligomers-trans-ε-viniferin (3), vitisin A (6), and vitisin B (9)-in I. lactea var. chinensis seeds were quantified as 2.32 (3), 4.95 (6), and 1.64 (9) mg/g dry weight (DW). All the isolated compounds were tested for their inhibitory activities against influenza neuraminidase. Compound 10 was found to be active with the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values at 4.76 µM. Taken together, it is concluded that I. lactea var. chinensis seed is a valuable source of stilbene oligomers with a human health benefit.
